Lions Split Conference Series with CSM

Over the weekend the College of Southern Maryland Hawks traveled up to Dundalk from La Plata Maryland for a doubleheader in which the Hawks won game one 20-2 and the Lions won the second 9-6.

In the top of the first the Hawks were able to get four hits with two outs and scored four runs to take an early 4-0 lead. The top of the second was three up three down, all from ground balls. In the bottom of the second Sam Richie would hit a lead-off single followed by a homerun from Mike Newsome Lions down 4-2. The top of the fifth inning was a rough one in which the Lions gave up 16. To everyone's surprise the Lions did not come back in the bottom of the 5th and the game ended 20-2.

The first three innings were all Lions. Ben Hall had 3 strikeouts while surrendering a hit in the first, a walk in the second and a three up, three down in the third. Meanwhile on offense the Lions were threatening, getting a runner in scoring position every inning but were never able to score.

The Hawks bats would wake up in the fourth as they would get 6 base runners from 2 walks and 4 hits to score 3 but Hall would get out of the inning with bases loaded. The Lions would start the bottom of the fourth with a lead off homerun from Richie. Newsome would then go yard for the second time today and the Lions were now down 3-2 after two back to back homeruns.

In the top of the fifth the Hawks were able to get their leadoff man on with an error. A single would move him to third and a ground ball would score him. A wild pitch would move the runner to third and a hit by pitch would put one on second. The Hawks would then double steal to score another, Hawks lead 5-2. Bottom of the 5th Ivan Gonzalez would lead off with a single. GT Maggay would hit a single of his own followed by an RBI double from Doyle McNew into the right center gap. The Hawks would then make a pitching change. First pitch, see you later, 3-run homerun for Richie his second of the game, Lions take a 6-5 lead.

In the top of the sixth a pitching change was made for the Lions, Ray Dougherty would come in for Ben Hall. A single and a stolen base followed by another single is how the Hawks would tie the game up. In the bottom of the sixth Gonzalez reached on a fielder's choice and would steal second. With two outs McNew would hit a single and move Gonzalez to third. A wild pitch would score Gonzalez. The home run hitters of the day Richie and Newsome would be walked and the bases were loaded for Isaiah Coxon who would hit a two RBI single, Lions lead 9-6.
